Our current writing unit is fairytales. The learners are loving it! Writing fairytales is not only fun and imaginative, but a wonderful way to develop strong narrative writing skills.
We began the unit reading several fairytales and talking about fairy tale structure. Then, we read some fairy tale adaptations. It took some time to figure out how to adapt a fairytale without straying too far from the original structure!
The learners just completed their first fairytale adaptations and they are very proud of their work. Some of the writing skills we focused on in this first part of the unit were using dialogue and action to bring characters to life, skillfully using narration, creating main characters with traits and wants, and writing strong endings.
